Council announces formation of Advisory Committees for enhanced community engagement

Flinders Shire Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing community engagement and strategic planning by establishing new Advisory Committees and appointing Councillors as members.

The newly-formed groups are designed to allow designated Councillors to undertake distinct roles that align with the Council's strategic priorities, including:

  • improving the level of Council’s engagement with the community on the issues and functions of the Advisory Committees.
  • gaining a greater understanding of the issues and aspirations of the community
  • the community gaining greater insight into the plans and operations of the Council.

The four Advisory Committees are:

  • Community Services and Wellbeing Advisory Committee (including health and aged care services, youth, and First Nations). Members include Cr Kerry Wells (Chair), Cr Niki Flute, Cr Clancy Middleton, and Mayor Kate Peddle (ex.officio)
  • Economic Development and Business Advisory Committee (including tourism, local business and events). Members include Cr Niki Flute (Chair), Cr Kelly Carter, Cr Kerry Wells, and Mayor Kate Peddle (ex officio)
  • Rural Advisory Committee (including roads and rural lands). Members include Cr Shane McCarthy (Chair), Cr Peter Fornasier, Cr Clancy Middleton, and Mayor Kate Peddle (ex officio)
  • Hughenden and Small Towns Advisory Committee – Members include Cr Peter Fornasier (Chair), Cr Kelly Carter, Cr Shane McCarthy, and Mayor Kate Peddle (ex officio).

Flinders Shire Mayor Kate Peddle said the Council aims to foster a deeper understanding of specific projects or issues that matter most to the community, while also enhancing collaboration and transparency in decision-making processes.

"These advisory committees will enable us to engage key Council staff and active community representatives in collaborative discussions, ensuring a holistic approach to decision-making,” she said.

The advisory committees will convene at least every three months, with the ability for the nominated Chair to call special sessions when necessary to address urgent topics or projects.

Meetings will be scheduled regularly across the Shire, aiming to encourage community involvement, gather valuable feedback, and foster collaboration.

"We are dedicated to keeping our community updated on these initiatives,” Mayor Peddle said.

“Regular updates will be communicated via our official social media channels and through the Council's community newsletter, ensuring that residents are always in the loop and can actively participate in the discussions.

“Flinders Shire Council encourages the community to get involved and come along to these meetings – it’s through our combined knowledge and efforts that we will better enhance delivery of our community’s services.

“We want to hear from our people with what they want and need, not just assuming what they want.

“Our Council looks forward to working closely with the community through these newly-established advisory committees to shape a brighter future for all.”
