Flinders Shire Australia Day 2025 Awards honour outstanding community contributions

The Flinders Shire community came together on Australia Day to celebrate the outstanding achievements and contributions of its citizens at the Flinders Shire Australia Day 2025 Awards.

Held at the Hughenden Diggers Entertainment Centre, the event featured a free breakfast, inspiring speeches, and the presentation of the 2025 Flinders Shire Australia Day Awards.

The awards ceremony recognised individuals and organisations who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and service to the Flinders Shire community.

The esteemed winners of the Flinders Shire Australia Day 2025 Awards were:

  • Citizen of the Year: Annmarie Wieben was celebrated for her selfless contributions to the community, from providing essential services to the elderly to supporting local events and fundraising efforts.
  • Junior Citizen of the Year: Kobe Steadman was recognised for his community-minded spirit, volunteer work, and leadership at Hughenden State School.
  • Southern Gulf NRM Saurus Crane Award: Ken and Jane Masterson were recognised for their commitment to environmental sustainability and agricultural productivity, particularly in invasive species control and ecosystem preservation.
  • Community Event of the Year: The Flinders Mix & Mingle, hosted by the St. Francis FACE Group, was celebrated for its popularity and economic impact, drawing attendees from across Queensland.
  • Senior Sports Person of the Year: Danielle Sladden was commended for her leadership in local sports, including gymnastics coaching and rugby union administration.
  • Junior Sports Person of the Year: Tori Mullaly was acknowledged for her dedication to rugby league and athletics, as well as her contributions to her team and community.

Australia Day Ambassador Peter Davis, founder of Bloodbikes Australia, captivated the audience with his reflections on what it means to be Australian and the important role of community service.

Special guest The Hon Bob Katter MP presented an achievement award to Greg Jones OAM, marking five years since he received his Order of Australia Medal.

Flinders Shire Mayor Kate Peddle also announced a significant donation to the rural fire brigade groups, raised during the community Christmas Party.

"The day was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the champions among us and what makes them so special," said Mayor Peddle.

"It's a chance to reflect on the camaraderie, the willingness to help one another, and the shared values that connect us all.

"Congratulations to all our award recipients. Your commitment and selflessness are what make Flinders Shire a fantastic place to live.

“Whether it's volunteering or simply being there for a neighbour, your efforts truly enrich our community and inspire us all to make a positive impact."
