Hughenden represented at NQ Volunteer Awards
Hughenden’s most dedicated volunteers are celebrating after being recognised with nominations at the annual Volunteering NQ Volunteer of the Year Awards.
Flinders Shire representatives at the recent awards included:
- Linda Bell – Hughenden Lions Club (Volunteer of the Year nominee)
- Mim Crase – All-rounder volunteer (Volunteer of the Year nominee)
- Hughenden Emergency Services Cadets (Volunteering Impact Award).
Flinders Shire Council Mayor Jane McNamara said volunteers have always been the life force of Hughenden.
“I’m so proud to see our wonderful Shire once again recognised as being a leader in volunteering,” Cr McNamara said.
“All of our volunteers extend helping hands and foster vital human connections which give hope and meaning to the lives of others in our Shire.
“They are the backbone of our region, and make up a huge part of the community. Congratulations to all those recognised.”
Linda has been involved with the community since moving to Hughenden 10 years ago and has been the secretary of the Lions Club of Hughenden for five years.
She also lends a hand with many other clubs in the community, including the Hughenden Railway Social Club.
“Linda is secretary of the Lions Club meaning she is the key contact person for coordinating event and enquiries to the service club,” said Cr McNamara.
“Linda has been a key leader in many of the club’s projects including obtaining a catering van, monthly markets at the lake, the annual community Christmas Carols and provision of the Driver Reviver site in Hughenden.”
Mim volunteers in several places, including helping visitors to the region and providing food and accommodation to those in need.
“Mim is incredibly selfless and giving, and is a huge asset to the community. Nearly everyone in the town knows Mim,” said Cr McNamara.
Emergency Services Cadets is a program run in Hughenden and other rural towns to support and encourage young people aged 12-17.
It supports children to extend into volunteering for emergency service organisations.
“The program provides life skills, team building, community development and is aimed at different cultural backgrounds and gives them a great opportunity to learn and build as a great person and a leader,” said Cr McNamara.
“It is a great experience for young people, and many different youths have continued from this into volunteering roles within the community.”
